To Irene Miner WeiszNov. 10, [1921?], from New YorkNewberry

Still doesn't know the amount of the hotel bill Irene paid, and would like to pay her debt. Isabelle sends thanks for the pleasant stay in Omaha. In Chicago, after her [Cather's] speech at the College Club, there was a dinner given by university classmates. Then went with Fanny Butcher to visit major book businesses, very tiring. Will send some good photos taken in Omaha.   Willie   [Stout #560]

To Fanny ButcherFeb. 7, 1924Newberry

Thanks for the art books at Christmas. Is it true she is to be married? Hopes to see her in Chicago in April.   Willa Cather   [Stout #716]

To Harriet MonroeOct. 27, 1926, from Jaffrey, N.H.Chicago

Appreciates her sending [Fanny] Butcher's review, which shows a grasp of what the book means. It's true, as other reviewers have said, that we are our own worst enemies, but that isn't what the book is saying. Eyes are better.   Willa Cather   [Stout #856]

To Fanny ButcherOct. 27, [1926], from Jaffrey, N.H.Newberry

She is probably the only person who has perfectly understood the book. Meant to be showing the basic attraction/repulsion of being in a marriage. Henshawes are intense lovers. Please send another copy of the review. Has enjoyed her stay in Jaffrey and feels proud of the mountain climbing she has done. Archbishop begins in the Forum in January. A completely new form for her.   Willa Cather   [Stout #857]

To Fanny Butcher,  n.d. [Dec. 1926] Newberry

Yes, send it along and she'll be glad to do that favor [sign a copy?]. Not going home for Christmas.   W. S. C.   [Stout #863]

To Fanny Butcher,  Thursday [Sept. 1, 1927] , from the Hotel Webster, New YorkNewberry

Has moved out of her apartment and put everything in storage. Neighborhood ruined by subway construction. What does she think of Archbishop? Review in New York World calls it weak as a novel. What is a novel? This is more like a legend. No women but the Virgin Mary. Took joy in doing it. She and Grant Overton were the only two reviewers who liked My Ántonia, and this is even less like a conventional novel. A narrative; something like a folk song. Was to have sailed on the Berengaria yesterday, but cancelled because of her father's illness.   Willa Cather   [Stout #892]

To Fanny ButcherSept. 17, [1927], from Jaffrey, N.H.Newberry

Thought she said legend, not folklore. A very different thing. The two priests' lives were like works of art. Hopes to go out to Arizona soon. Glad to autograph copy. A very gracious review.   Willa Cather   [Stout #896]
